Want to Experience NeuroMovement®?

Learn to use slow, gentle movement to change you brain,
so you can move through life with comfort and ease.

As you experience life, you form habits of movement and habits of mind. Some of them may serve you quite well. Others may actually be getting in your way.

NeuroMovement® lessons help you become aware of your habits and discover additional possibilities for movement so that you can move through life more easily and comfortably.

If you're in pain, NeuroMovement® can help you feel better.  If you already feel good, lessons can help you achieve higher levels of performance.

You can experience NeuroMovement® as either voice-led lessons or hands-on lessons. Both types of lessons have their advantages, and I encourage you to try both.

Transformational Movement® Lessons (TML)

During most TML's, you lie upon a mat on the floor (or in a bed if pain is an issue). Some lessons require that you sit in a chair or stand upright.

You move slowly and gently in response to my voice-led instruction.

These can be private or group classes, in-person or via Zoom.

Functional Synthesis® Lessons (FS)

During private FS lessons, you lie fully clothed upon the table or a mat on the floor. Lessons may also be adapted so that you may sit in a chair.

I move you through a series of slow, gentle movements to allow you to discover additional possibilities for movement.

Intensives

An intensive is a series of 5-10 Functional Synthesis® lessons taken over a shorter period of time.  Experience more cumulative changes when there is less time for learning loss between lessons.  Take weeks to months off between classes to integrate the changes into your daily life.

You may participate in TML's 1-2x per week between intensives to keep your brain active.

"I started seeing Ana right before the pandemic came along. I had been seeing my chiropractor 1-2x a week, to help with a torn labrum. Once in full force pandemic mode, I engaged in physical distancing, and stopped going to my chiropractor, but began seeing Ana on-line weekly. I believe that seeing Ana weekly kept my body in alignment, with no need for supplemental chiropractic visits."

Frequently Asked Questions

Because NeuroMovement® uses movement to "speak" to the brain, NeuroMovement® is good for anyone with a brain.  That said, my most satisfied students are looking for some kind of pain or stress relief.  Others would like to improve their sleep and balance after some kind of brain injury.  Yet another group is looking for an embodied practice that helps them "get out of their head" and more into their physical body.

My most successful students are open-minded, curious people eager to engage in a process of discovery.  They love NeuroMovement® precisely because it requires exploration to find what will work best for them.  They understand that their individual movement solutions will be as unique as they are.

Most of my students start experiencing changes from their very first lesson. Results build upon each other; so, clients who commit to a series of lessons get better, more lasting results.

NeuroMovement® is good for natural pain relief for a variety of conditions including, but not limited to: arthritis, joint stiffness, joint pain, plantar fasciitis, ankle pain, tendonitis, knee pain, hip pain, sciatica, back pain, scoliosis, brachial plexus injury, shoulder pain, carpal tunnel, neck pain, TMJ (jaw) pain, migraines, whiplash, repetitive stress injuries, post-partum recovery, and post-surgical recovery.

Because NeuroMovement® works with the brain, it has the potential to help in conditions where the nervous system is affected: vertigo, stroke, TBI(Traumatic Brain Injury), Post-Concussive Syndrome, MS (Multiple Sclerosis), Parkinson's, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia.

NeuroMovement® has also helped people with a variety of conditions that can sometimes lead to learning issues, such as anxiety, depression, ADHD/ADD, sensory processing disorder, and a number of learning disabilities.

No.  NeuroMovement® is an educational system that uses movement to communicate with the brain.  Any changes you may feel or effects on conditions you may have are solely the result of neuroplastic changes that take place in the brain secondary to learning.

No.  NeuroMovement® is an educational system that uses movement to communicate with the brain.  I keep lesson notes to remind me of what lessons you have received.  To protect your privacy, those notes are kept in a HIPAA safe electronic vault.  They are not, however, medical records.

Because NeuroMovement® is an educational system, there are no billing codes for my services.  Should you like, I can provide you with a receipt for the number of lessons received, the amount paid, and the description of services provided as “neuromuscular reeducation” for you to submit to your health insurance company.

No.  NeuroMovement® is an educational system and, as such, is not yet covered by medical insurance.

So many modalities have something to offer us.  They all work in different ways, though, and can sometimes work against each other.  Even something as simple as a massage can sometimes affect the outcome of a lesson.  In general, it's best to stick to one modality at a time so you can tell what works for you and what doesn't.

If at all possible, please schedule your NeuroMovement® lessons on a week when you're not seeing any other practitioners.  If you're a performer or athlete, please schedule your lessons after your events, so that you feel free to experiment and explore movements without any performance pressure.

During voice-led lessons you lie on a mat on the floor (or sit in a chair, or stand, depending on the lesson).  I take you through a series of slow, gentle movement variations to explore a functional movement pattern.  Unlike an exercise class, there is no model for you to follow.  Instead, it is the slow, gentle process of exploration itself that helps your brain find your ideal trajectory for that movement.

All movements should be small and gentle.  If there is any pain or discomfort, try the movement a different way.  If it is still uncomfortable, simply visualize the movement.  Visualizing the movement can be just as effective to create new neural pathways as doing the movement itself.  Lessons should always be comfortable so that you learn to do the movement in a way that is easy for you.

At first students may feel uncomfortable not knowing what is "right," but eventually they come to enjoy the process of finding the answers for themselves.  No one else can say what works best for their body.  Only by feeling what works and what doesn't can you give your brain the information it needs to make those "calculations."

As teacher, I watch to help keep you safe.  I may occasionally provide prompts via voice or touch to help further clarify a movement.

If you are having a lesson on the table, I will move you.  Most students find lessons very relaxing.  So much so, in fact, that they often cool off on the table as they would at bedtime.  Make sure to wear enough soft, comfortable layers to stay warm.

No matter what kind of lesson you have, you must communicate with me in the moment if anything feels uncomfortable or hurts.  Lessons should never be painful, as we cannot learn well when we are distracted by discomfort.  Help me give you the best possible lesson by speaking up whenever you have questions or concerns.  Thank you!

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing without hoods, buttons, zippers, or other hard elements.  Layers are best, as sometimes people can relax so much they get chilly on the table.  Clothing should allow for a full range of motion.

Please ALWAYS wear socks.

Please leave belts, jewelry, watches, and contact lenses at home.  I will ask you to remove your glasses before your lesson.  It would be wise to bring a protective case for them.

If you have long hair, please wear it in a high ponytail so that I don't accidentally snag it while moving you.

Your brain has begun to change during a lesson.  You may feel some changes right away after your first lesson.  Some people take a few lessons to begin to feel changes.

Common experiences include feeling more firmly grounded while walking and  feeling less muscle tension.  As a result, you may be more flexible than usual for a while.

You may also notice your pain gets much better or disappears completely.  Take care to protect your new neural connections by taking time to integrate these changes gradually into your life.  Slowly reintroduce activities like exercise or stretching to avoid injury.  Please refrain from vigorous activity for the rest of the day after your lesson.

Some people are very relaxed after a lesson.  You may feel like having a nap or going to bed early on the day of your lesson.  You may also experience particularly vivid dreams during an intensive.

As you begin to sense yourself more accurately, your movement starts to become better organized. Your movements feel smoother, easier, and more comfortable. Aches and pains start to disappear. Your balance may improve. Your mind calms, and you may sleep more easily.

Because the brain is an interconnected system, as you upgrade the parts of the brain dedicated to movement, you also improve global brain functioning. Students in my training program have reported incidental improvements in their vision. Some of my local students have reported greater clarity of thought and enhanced problem-solving abilities after a series of lesson.

Learning any new skill takes time.  Ideally you would sign up for 5-10 private lessons within the period of a week to accelerate learning.  We call these "intensives", and they are described above.  (To schedule an intensive, please contact me directly.)

Given the constraints of your busy life, you may not be able to fit all those lessons into one week.  The closer together you can schedule them, though, the more dramatic the changes you will feel.  Compare it to learning to swim: a week of swim camp can go a lot further than taking weekly lessons for a few months.

After an intensive you may take weeks to months to integrate the changes into your life.  I recommend keeping up with weekly voice-led lessons, whether live or recorded, to keep your brain in a state of positive change.  It is, however, completely optional.

You may schedule single lessons outside an intensive so long as there is room in my schedule.

Try to incorporate the Nine Essentials into your everyday life.  They help to create the conditions in the brain that enhance learning, decrease pain, and facilitate recovery.  You can find the Nine Essentials on my blog.

Consider taking voice-led lessons in person or via Zoom once or twice a week.  You may also purchase pre-recorded lessons.

Recommendations are personalized to fit your specific needs.  To explore how NeuroMovement® might help you, schedule a free discovery call here.

We now know that the brain has the ability to change at any age.     We call this brain plasticity or neuroplasticity.   When conditions are right, the brain can make hundreds of thousands of new connections and patterns per second.

By paying close attention to what you feel as you slowly move, you alert the brain to take notice of what’s happening.  NeuroMovement® lessons take you through a series of subtle movement variations in the context of functional movement patterns.  As your brain takes in the information offered by moving in this way, your daily movements become better organized.  The process allows you to let go of unnecessary muscle contractions so that you can bear weight through your skeleton with a maximum of comfort and ease.      You learn how not to work against yourself so that your movement can begin to feel effortless.

On the inside, your brain is literally growing new connections as you begin to more accurately map your body in your brain.  The more accurate your brain maps, the better your brain can organize your movement.  You move more freely, with less pain or discomfort.

As your movement becomes smoother, you develop more stamina.  By upgrading communication between brain and body, you can avoid and even reverse the loss of strength and flexibility associated with aging or injury.

A Seriously Inspiring Story

Deo is a former college athlete who experienced his first soccer injury in eighth grade. After that came broken vertebrae, concussions… and chronic pain.

When Deo came to me for movement lessons, he was desperate for a solution. The pain had become so overwhelming that it clouded every aspect of his life. He felt overwhelmed and stuck.

Today Deo says that NeuroMovementⓇ “proved to be a powerful catalyst for healing, growth, and ever-improving well-being. Experiencing [the] work was foundational in that it gave me momentum for healing in all areas of my life, even after months apart during Covid-19. The benefits I received from my time experiencing [Ana Maria's] work have stayed with me to this day, with no diminished effects.”
